Facilitating and Advocating the Education of a Girl Child

Uganda faces critical challenges that disproportionately affect adolescent girls, often cutting their education short and limiting their future opportunities:

The Stark Reality in Uganda

Menstrual Poverty & Education: Research from the Ministry of Education and Sports, as indicated in the Auditor General’s Value for Money Report 2024, reveals that 64% of girls in Uganda miss school during their periods due to a lack of access to sanitary products. This highlights a major barrier to girls’ education, as repeated absences disrupt learning, lower academic performance, and raise dropout risks.

Teenage Pregnancy

According to the 2022 Uganda Demographic and Health Survey (UDHS), the national teenage pregnancy rate stands at 24%, meaning one in four girls aged 15-19 has already begun childbearing. In some specific contexts or regions, studies and reports have highlighted that up to 34% of young girls face early marriage by age 18, which is a major driver of early pregnancy.

ACKLAF is dedicated to championing the empowerment and education of the Ugandan girl child, carrying forward the vision of the late Archbishop Cyprian Kizito Lwanga. The foundation aims to dismantle the systemic barriers that currently hinder young women from reaching their full academic and personal potential.
