Born on 19th January 1953 in Kyabakadde, Uganda, His Grace Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga rose from humble beginnings in Nagalama Parish to become one of the most influential spiritual leaders in Uganda and across Africa. He was a man deeply grounded in theology, education, and compassion, serving both the Church and the people with unwavering devotion. From his early education at Kyabakadde Primary School to his higher studies in Rome and France, he pursued wisdom with humility and purpose.
Our events are at the heart of community engagement and service delivery. Through sensitization programs and free medical camps, the foundation reaches out to communities with vital information, essential healthcare services, and practical support. These initiatives are designed to promote awareness, improve well-being, and ensure that underserved populations receive the care and attention they deserve.
The Most Rev. Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga, the pioneer bishop of Kasana-Luweero diocese and later Archbishop of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Kampala is still remembered by many for his contribution to the Church and the country at large, particularly in the areas of spirituality, health-care, education, culture and social development.
Archbishop Lwanga’s wonderful works came out even more clearly during the commemoration of his 4th death anniversary, last year. The Prelate’s memorial celebrations, which ran from April 9 to April 10, 2025, were organized by Archbishop Cyprian Kizito Lwanga Foundation, in partnership with the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Kampala, Nsambya Hospital, Kisubi Hospital and Uganda Martyrs Hospital Lubaga. The activities were intended to honor and immortalize Archbishop Lwanga’s rich legacy and contribution to humanity. Even more interestingly, the activities reflected the things that Archbishop Lwanga deemed cardinal, or prioritized during his sacerdotal and episcopal ministry, that is, spirituality, health-care and social development.
The inaugural Archbishop Cyprian Kizito Lwanga Memorial Day started with a 2-day mega health camp at Lubaga Hospital Specialist Centre. It was officially launched by the Vicar General of Kampala Archdiocese, the Rt Rev Msgr. Gerald Kalumba (on Wednesday, April 9, 2025). The function was also graced by the Executive Director of Lubaga Hospital Dr Julius Luyimbaazi and the Director of Archbishop Cyprian Kizito Lwanga Foundation, Mrs. Rose Lukwago.
Msgr. Kalumba spoke highly of Archbishop Lwanga describing him as an exemplary Prelate of the Catholic Church who was deeply committed to the people and their development.
“He had immense love for the people. He had big dreams geared towards people’s holistic development. He had in plan an evangelistic strategy whereby every village would have a chapel, a health center and a cooperative house. He was deeply convinced that impoverished people could neither embrace nor assimilate the Gospel message, the reason why he always came up with strategic social development initiatives,” Kalumba said.
Msgr Kalumba thanked the family of Archbishop Lwanga and Archbishop Cyprian Kizito Lwanga Foundation for organizing the medical camp, which he said, reflected their desire to remember the deceased Prelate as well as carrying on his pro-people projects and ideals. He also thanked the respective partners, including Kampala Archdiocese, Uganda Martyrs Hospital Lubaga, Nsambya Hospital, Kisubi, and others, for their support and goodwill. He thanked the Board of Lubaga Hospital in a special way for immortalizing the deceased Prelate by naming the hospital’s newly-constructed specialist centre after him.
The first day of the medical camp attracted over 650 patients who were screened/tested and given first treatment for diseases such as malaria, cancer, diabetes, high-blood pressure, eye-complications and dental complications among-others. By the close of the health-camp (on Thursday, April 10, 2025), over 1,000 patients had been screened and treated.
The event was officially closed on 10th April 2025 by the Chancellor of the archdiocese, the Rev Fr Dr Pius Male Ssentumbwe, who described the late Archbishop as a dedicated servant of God, who was a true shepherd, whose ministry was characterized by deep prayer, moral courage, humility unwavering commitment to the dignity of every human.

Another key activity was the memorial mass at Lubaga Cathedral on Thursday, April 10 (2025). The mass at 3:00pm was presided over by the Vicar-General, Msgr. Rogers Kabuye Mukasa, who in his homily, also lavished praises on Archbishop Lwanga for his marvelous deeds and contribution to the Church and the country’s socio-economic transformation. The Eucharistic celebration was even more dignified by the presence of the Apostolic Nuncio, His Excellency Archbishop Dr. Augustine Kasujja.
The commemorative events climaxed with the maiden memorial lecture and dinner at Uganda Catholic Management and Training Institute Lubaga (during the evening of Thursday, April 10, 2026). The Lecture was delivered by Dr Peter Kimbowa (a celebrated consultant and coach) who spoke on the theme: Empowering Communities to be Pilgrims of Hope. Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere dignified the event with his presence.
Held the 2nd Archbishop Cyprian Kizito Lwanga Memorial Day on 14th April 2026 at Kyabakadde Catholic Parish, which included a medical camp that provided free medical services to over 1000 people, continuing to bring care closer to the community for God’s glory.
